Professor Amanda Ashour was raised in western Pennsylvania and is a life-long Steelers fan. She has earned two master's degrees and has worked both in the library and archives fields as well as in higher education. She challenges her students to seek education for education's sake and to see it for what it is: a powerful tool that will change their lives. At the heart of her composition classes is the understanding that reading is central to writing, and writing cannot exist without reading. She stresses the importance and interconnectedness of those two skills. Her goal is not simply to educate but to inspire. As William Butler Yeats so eloquently wrote, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."
