Biography

Dr. George Darden is a sixth-generation Georgia teacher. Before coming to GGC, Darden was social studies teacher in several different schools, including over a decade at Henry W. Grady High School in the Atlanta Public Schools. Darden successfully defended his dissertation at the University of Georgia in December 2011, and joined the GGC faculty in the fall of 2012.

Darden teaches courses in educational foundations, an interdisciplinary field that uses anthropology, sociology, psychology, history and philosophy to explore school-based phenomena. He also has taught courses in secondary teaching methods, educational technology, special education, and differentiation to students aiming to become middle school and high school teachers. Each semester, Darden supervises several GGC student-teachers who are working in the Gwinnett County Public Schools as part of the Educator Preparation Program.

Darden has served on the faculty senate and on several school-wide and college-wide committees, including hiring committees. In 2018, Darden's peers elected him chair of faculty for foundations and 6-12 programs. In that role, he works on the School of Education Leadership Team and serves as a liaison between the School of Education and the Schools of Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.

In addition, Darden is the father of twin boys and an accomplished endurance athlete, having competed and placed in several of the country's and the world's largest marathons and twice in the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii.
