Biography

Capt. Jeff Smith is a dedicated career public safety professional. He has been employed as a law enforcement officer since 1988, and has risen through the ranks, holding positions in every functional area of a department. He currently serves as a captain, commanding the Investigative Services bureau of the Lawrenceville Police Department.

He began his teaching career as an adjunct instructor with Georgia Gwinnett College in 2010, teaching within the criminal justice/criminology discipline of the School of Liberal Arts.

Smith is very active in the community. He belongs to many civic organizations in Gwinnett County and has led many. In addition to working for the Lawrenceville Police Department and teaching at GGC, Smith serves on the board of directors of two local non-profit organizations.

Smith holds memberships in many professional organizations. He is an accredited accident reconstructionist through ACTAR; he is also a certified planner through IALEP. Additionally, he holds membership in the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Executive Research Forum, the Southern Criminal Justice Association, and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

He holds degrees in mathematics, business administration and public administration. He is currently working on a doctorate in emergency management.

On a personal level, he enjoys local history and genealogy.
