The Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team has released the game schedule for its first-ever season, highlighted by 31 home games next spring.
The 2013 slate currently features 52 games in all, with the team playing as a member of the Association of Independent Institutions.
“We have built a very competitive schedule that will test our program in its first season,” Grizzlies head coach Brad Stromdahl said. “We will have the opportunity to establish our team, see where we stand and continue to improve. We will face some of the best teams in the country as we play eight games against teams from last year’s national top 25 and we are excited about building toward that challenge.”
The season opens Friday, Feb. 8, as the Grizzlies begin a three-game home series with Voorhees College (S.C.) in the first games in program history.
Stromdahl’s club will host 10 games in February, 19 more in March and a pair in April.
The Grizzlies are preparing to play on their brand new, state-of-the-art field next spring, part of the $13.5M Varsity Athletics Complex on the GGC campus.
The team will make many road trips inside the state of Georgia, including its first away game on Feb. 13 at Truett-McConnell. The schedule also features two trips each to the states of Tennessee and South Carolina.
Georgia Gwinnett is scheduled to play 12 doubleheaders during the year.
The Grizzlies will face a Tennessee Wesleyan squad in that’s reached the NAIA championship tournament in each of the last three years and a Cumberland University team that’s made 11 all-time appearances in the tournament.
The season concludes at the end of April when GGC travels to Lee University, a squad that has twice played for the NAIA national championship in the last five years.
As a first-year NAIA member, the Grizzlies are not eligible to compete in postseason play until 2014.
