The Georgia Gwinnett College softball team has released its first-ever schedule, featuring 56 games for the spring 2013 season.
The Grizzlies will play their opponents in a two-game, doubleheader format on each day of competition.
Georgia Gwinnett will have 28 home games and is preparing to play on its brand new, state-of-the-art field next spring, part of the $13.5M Varsity Athletics Complex on the GGC campus.
The team will play 28 more games on the road, with trips to Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and around the state of Georgia planned.
"Our schedule is full of challenging opponents who are consistently ranked highly in the NAIA," Grizzlies head coach Kat Ihlenburg said. "Quite a few of our opponents have made it to the NAIA championship tournament and we want to compete right away with the best teams in the country."
One of the road highlights comes March 8-10, when GGC travels to Gulf Shores, Ala., for the Mobile Tournament hosted by the University of Mobile.
Two teams on the Grizzlies' schedule (Mobile, Thomas University) have previously won the NAIA national championship while four have played in the NAIA championship tournament in the last three years.
The season opens Saturday, Feb. 9, when GGC hosts a pair of games against Faulkner University (Ala.) at 2 and 4 p.m.
Ihlenburg's squad will host six doubleheaders on campus in their first month, then eight more during March. April features a 14-game road swing through four states.
The team wraps up its schedule April 20 with a road series at Voorhees College (S.C.).
GGC will compete as a member of the Association of Independent Institutions and as a first-year NAIA member, will not be eligible for postseason play until 2014.
