Dr. Daniel J. Kaufman, founding president of Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), will be the keynote speaker for the college’s spring commencement. The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m., May 17, on the college’s main lawn.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Kaufman back to campus to commemorate GGC’s incredible growth 10 years after its first commencement, over which he presided,” said Dr. Stas Preczewski, president. “In spring 2008, 17 students walked across the stage. This spring alone, more than 500 graduates will follow in their footsteps.”

Kaufman served as president of GGC from 2005 until 2013 when he became president and chief executive officer of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, one of the nation’s largest suburban chambers of commerce. Kaufman is responsible for all chamber programs as well as for being an advocate for regional strategic initiatives for a more competitive economy and an enhanced quality of life in Gwinnett County and the metropolitan Atlanta region.

In addition to his responsibilities at the Chamber, Dr. Kaufman is a member of the board of directors of a number of civic and philanthropic organizations, to include the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Explore Gwinnett, the Council for Quality Growth, Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful, the Mitsubishi Electric Championship Foundation, the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services, the Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation, the Regional Business Coalition and the Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville.

For the past three years Dr. Kaufman has been named by Georgia Trend magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians. The Atlanta Business Chronicle also designated him as one of the 100 Most Influential Atlantans.

Before serving as president of GGC, Kaufman was a brigadier general in the U.S. Army, serving as dean of the Academic Board and chief academic officer at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 2017 Dr. Kaufman was selected as a Distinguished Graduate by that institution.
