Applied Mathematics Track, Mathematics Major
Applied mathematics is the study of mathematical techniques which are used to solve problems in a variety of other fields. Historically physics and engineering have been the subject of most applied mathematical problems, but more recently biology, information technology, and many other fields have greatly benefited from the introduction of mathematical ideas. Key areas of applied mathematics that have seen growth recently include mathematical modeling, the study of how best to turn a real world problem into a mathematical problem, numerical methods, the process for finding accurate approximations to complicated problems, and operations research, the study of how to make decisions in an optimal manner.
The Applied Mathematics track offers courses in all of these areas as well as more traditional applied topics such as differential equations and statistics. Students in the applied mathematics track will take a sequence of courses in a relevant field to which the mathematical techniques being studied can be applied as well as having the opportunity to conduct independent work as part of their program. Graduates of the Applied Mathematics will have a strong background to pursue a career in a variety of fields or to go on to graduate or professional school.
