Biology Teacher Certification Track, Biology Major

Biology Teacher Certification Track provides students a degree in biology while simultaneous preparing them to teach biology at the secondary level, grades 8-12. The biology component of the track provides a broad background in the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution and classification of all living things as well as selected study in depth of biology sub-disciplines of areas such as botany, zoology, microbiology, and molecular biology. The track also includes a specific program of teacher education courses to prepare students for certification. The teacher education program prepares candidates for interaction with diverse student population at various emotional, intellectual, and physical stages of development stages in many different educational settings, including parents, the school community, and teaching and classroom experience.

Biology teacher certification track students take a range of courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math and learn valuable laboratory and field investigative skills applicable to the biology and chemistry fields. The primary purpose of this track is to prepare students for employment as biology teachers in public or private high schools. In addition, with a major in biology they will also be prepared to enter the broader workforce or to pursue graduate or professional school.
