Biochemistry Track, Biology Major

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical substances and vital processes occurring in living organisms. Biochemists focus heavily on the role, function, and structure of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids and investigate the chemistry behind biological processes and biologically active molecules. For example, the biochemistry of cell metabolism and the endocrine system has been extensively investigated and described.

Other areas of biochemistry include the genetic code (DNA, RNA), protein synthesis, cell membrane transport, and signal transduction. Biochemistry track students take a range of courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math and learn valuable laboratory skills applicable to the biology and chemistry fields. In addition, the biochemistry track offers several free electives that allow students to pursue academic interests in any school at GGC.

Biochemists play many roles within the scientific community, including working with agriculture, the pharmaceutical industry, and crime labs. For example, they find new ways to diagnose and treat disease in humans including potentially creating anti-cancer agents and others for possible treatments for disease. In addition to preparing students for graduate and professional schooling, the biochemistry track offers many employment opportunities.
