General Biology Track, Biology Major
General biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution and classification of all living things by generally investigating cell theory, evolution, gene theory, energy, and homeostasis. The sub-disciplines of biology are grouped by the type of organism being studied. For example, botany is the study of plants, zoology is the study of animals, and microbiology is the study of microorganisms.
These fields are further sub-divided based on the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them. As an example of scale, molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules, physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms interrelate with their environment.
General biology track students take a range of courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math and learn valuable laboratory and field investigative skills applicable to the biology and chemistry fields. In addition, the general biology track offers several free electives that allow students to pursue academic interests in any school at GGC.
Biologists play many roles within the scientific community, including working with agriculture, the pharmaceutical industry, and crime labs. For example, they find new ways to diagnose and treat disease in humans including potentially creating anti-cancer agents and others for possible treatments for disease. In addition to preparing students for graduate and professional schooling, the general biology track offers many employment opportunities.
