English for Academic Purposes
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible to enroll in the EAP program?
If your first language or home language is not English, AND you do not have transferrable college level English credit, AND your scores are below SAT 480 on the verbal section or ACT 21on the national English ACT, you may be eligible for the EAP program. Your placement into the courses is determined by your ESL COMPASS scores. Eligible students are required to take ESL COMPASS tests prior to registration.
What are the benefits of enrolling in the EAP program?
The EAP courses are parallel to the Student Success reading and English courses, targeted to students with multilingual backgrounds. Unlike Student Success reading and English courses, there is no limit on the number of times a student may attempt an EAP course, and exiting the courses does not require taking the Exit COMPASS test.
How many credit hours are the EAP courses and how many courses will I need to take?
There are 11 credit hours in each level of EAP. The number of courses and hours that you are required to take depends on your placement scores.
Can I take other courses while I am taking EAP courses?
Yes, there are a limited number of courses that you may take while you are also taking EAP courses; however, each semester, you must be registered for all required EAP courses before you can take any other non-EAP courses.
Can I withdraw from an EAP class and continue to take my other courses?
You may withdraw from one EAP class and remain in your other EAP courses. When you withdraw from more than one required EAP course, you are also withdrawn from all your college level courses. This includes college-level math courses.
Do the EAP courses count toward my graduation credit?
No, EAP courses do not count toward graduation. They are required pre-college courses. For that reason, the grades do not count in your GPA (grade point average). However, the courses do count for full-time enrollment status for visa or insurance purposes, and the grades do count in HOPE scholarships and financial aid evaluations.
Whom should I contact for more information?
