English Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 0098 and 0099?
ENGL 0098 is an intensive study of foundational concepts and structures of written English, such as grammar and mechanics, word choice and sentence structure, and audience and purpose. Students in ENGL 0098 also learn how to select topics for writing and generate positions and topic sentences to argue. ENGL 0099 reviews these concepts and expands upon them to include arguing from a thesis, developing ideas and claims that support the thesis and selecting appropriate style for audience.
Both classes emphasize the numerous steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising and editing. But it is the scale of writing projects between the two classes that significantly differs: students in ENGL 0098 develop their core skills proficiency in the writing of paragraphs, while Students in ENGL 0099 develop their core skills proficiency in the writing of essays.
Placement of students into 0098, 0099 or 1101 is determined by their performance on the COMPASS writing examination and, if required, their performance on a placement essay examination proctored by GGC and evaluated by GGC faculty.
What must I do to move from 0098 into 0099?
Students must receive a final grade of C (70%) or higher in the class to graduate from ENGL 0098 to ENGL 0099. Students can also graduate from 0098 to 0099 at the specific discretion of the instructor.
What must I do to move from 0099 to English 1101?
Students must receive a final grade of C or higher in the class, must pass a qualifying essay test that recommends them to take the COMPASS test, and must score at least a 60 on the COMPASS, to graduate to ENGL 1101. Register to take the COMPASS test.
What happens if I do not move out of the Student Success class I’m placed in?
In the event that students do not move out of their Student Success class, those students will be reenrolled in that class the next semester it is offered at the College.
