Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How are students placed into Student Success courses?
All students with less than 30 transferable credits and no transferable English credit (ENGL 1101), or scores of SAT 460/ACT 19 or lower in math and score of SAT 480/ACT 21 or lower in verbal skills, are required to take the COMPASS placement test. COMPASS test scores will exempt them from Student Success courses or determine their appropriate level in the program.

What are the requirements for exiting Student Success?
Students in SS ENGL 0099 must pass a writing sample and score 60 or above on the COMPASS English exit exam.

Students in SS READ 0098 must pass the course and score 78 or above on the COMPASS reading exit exam.

Students in SS MATH 0099 must pass the course with a C or better and score 37 or above on the COMPASS math exit exam.

Students in ESL 0090 and 0091 must pass the courses with a C or better and score a 3 on the writing sample.

How many attempts do students have to exit Students Success?
All students must exit a SS discipline area in three attempts. (May appeal.  See below.)  This does not mean three attempts in each course.  It means three attempts in each area (reading, English and math). In EAP, there is no limit on the number of attempts in each course.

All grades except for W count as attempts. Grades A, B, or C are successful attempts. Grades IP, F or WF are unsuccessful attempts; however, all are attempts. Please note the grade of W does not count as an attempt.

What happens after the third attempt if a student is still unsuccessful?
A student may appeal to take a fourth attempt in English and reading and a fourth and fifth attempt in math if

  • the student is in an exit level course.
  • the student has reached the attempt limit in only one discipline.
  • the student has a reasonable chance of success as determined by his or her last instructor.

A student is required to complete an appeal form and get the appropriate signatures. Time (attempts) spent in Student Success coursework in a disciplinary area shall be cumulative within the USG.  However, a transfer student with fewer than three semesters and fewer than 12 semester hours in an area may be granted an additional semester for a total of 15 semester hours in all institutions attended if that student was making progress and is ready for the exit level of SS courses at GGC.

What if a student has completed course work and exited an area of Student Success at another institution?
Students who have completed coursework and passed the exit exam in any Student Success area at another USG institution will not be required to re-take that area of Student Success.

Students will be required to take Student Success courses in the area(s) from which they have not exited.

When do students register for their required Student Success courses?
Student Success courses take precedence over all college-level classes. During each semester, students must first register for all required Student Success courses before being allowed to register for other courses. This applies to part-time students as well.
Two exceptions are possible:

  • When two or three Student Success areas are required and the student is enrolled in at least one of those areas, approved courses may be taken instead of one of the Student Success required courses.
  • If the Student Success course is not available, a student may enroll in a degree credit course if the student has met the course prerequisite, subject to the written approval of the President or the VPASA with endorsement of the appropriate dean.

Can students withdraw from their Student Success Courses?
Students enrolled in both Student Success courses and credit courses may not withdraw from their Student Success course(s) with a W unless they also withdraw from credit courses.

If students withdraw, their financial aid may be impacted and they will need to check with a financial aid counselor. Students who are taking only Student Success courses may withdraw from one or more Student Success courses to reduce course load.

What is the 20 semester hour rule?
Students who have accumulated 20 semester hours of college-level coursework at GGC and have not successfully completed their Student Success requirements may enroll only in Student Success courses until they have successfully completed their SS requirements.

Students with transfer credit who are required to take Student Success courses may earn up to 20 additional credit hours of college-level coursework.  After earning those additional hours, students must enroll in Student Success courses only.

Can students be suspended if they do not successfully complete their Student Success requirement within the given time frames?
Students will be suspended and may not be considered for readmission within three (3) years of suspension.

Students who have been suspended from an institution without completing the Student Success requirements may not be exempted from those requirements through transfer of course credit unless they are eligible for transfer admission under the institution’s regular transfer admission policies.
