Math Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between MATH 0099 and MATH 1111?
MATH 0099 is designed to remedy fundamental deficiencies that you have that would make it likely that you would be unsuccessful in MATH 1111, College Algebra. MATH 0099 is aimed at a lower level of difficulty in the problems and equations than in College Algebra. Because many of the topics are similar, we anticipate that you will find much of MATH 1111 familiar, thereby easing your transition to college-level mathematics. In addition, MATH 0099 teaches study skills designed to help you learn to study mathematics in your future mathematics courses.
What do I have to do to get out of MATH 0099 and into MATH 1111?
In order to move into MATH 1111, you must have a final grade of C or better in MATH 0099. This means completing the material and the final exam. Then you will be eligible to take the COMPASS test. Passing that will allow you to exit the course. Register to take the COMPASS test.
I made all A’s in math in high school. I think I’ve been misplaced. What can I do?
Grades in high school mathematics are not always the best indicator of whether you are ready for college-level mathematics. The grades you receive vary from teacher to teacher and course to course. However, you may retake the COMPASS test one time. There is a nominal cost for doing so and the retake should be done before the start of classes, certainly before the end of drop/add, so that you can modify your schedule. Otherwise, you will be officially enrolled in MATH 0099 and must exit through the normal procedure.
Since the course is self-paced, can I exit early?
It is possible to exit early. If you have completed the material, you can exit at the fourth, eighth, or twelfth week. Your instructor will be able to give you further details.
What if I don’t complete all the requirements in MATH 0099 before the end of the semester? What if I don’t make a C or better in MATH 0099? What if I fail the COMPASS test?
If you do not successfully exit MATH 0099, then you will receive a grade of IP (In Progress) in the course and have to enroll in MATH 0099 the next semester. You may take MATH 0099 a total of three (3) semesters. Students who do not exit MATH 0099 within the three-semester limit will be unable to attend a University System school for at least three years.
