Student Success Mathematics is taught in the MATH 0099 course. By concentrating their efforts, students can successfully learn the mathematics they need and exit Student Success in one semester. This allows them to take mainstream mathematics courses, science and business courses, and other courses that require students to have exited MATH 0099.

Math Classes

Students Success MATH 0099 is a self-paced course that uses computer software to provide individualized instruction for students. It makes sure that students master topics before moving on to the next. Student Success MATH 0099 also contains a study skills component to help students learn how to effectively study mathematics in order to be more successful in their next mathematics courses.

The content of Students Success MATH 0099 is as follows:

  • Arithmetic, including fractions, decimals, percent, geometry and descriptive statistics
  • Real numbers, including the arithmetic of signed numbers and the laws of real numbers
  • Linear equations and inequalities
  • Functions, lines and systems of equations
  • Integer exponents and polynomials, including the laws of exponents, the arithmetic of polynomials and factoring
  • Complex numbers and quadratic functions, including the graphs of quadratic functions, the arithmetic of complex numbers and the quadratic formula
  • Rational expressions and proportions, including rational functions and their graphs
  • Radicals and rational exponents, including square root and cube root functions and their graphs 

Placement into Math Classes

Enrollment in Student Success MATH 0099 occurs two ways:

  • Placement through the COMPASS placement test.
  • Dropping back from College Algebra or Precalculus.

The first and most common way to place into a math course is through the COMPASS test taken by incoming students. If your score falls below 37, your algebra skills are considered to be insufficient for success in MATH 1111, College Algebra, and you are placed into MATH 0099.

The second way of entering Student Success MATH 0099 is by dropping back from College Algebra or even Precalculus. Some students take this route to get a refresher course to maximize their chances of success in the higher-level courses.

Exiting Math Classes

There are two requirements that must be passed in order to exit Student Success math.

  • Complete at least 90% of the ALEKS computer software program.
  • Final grade of C or better in the course.
  • Passing COMPASS exit test.

You are eligible to take the COMPASS math exit test when you have a grade of B or better in the course. This means you must complete all of the assignments before one of the assigned dates for the exit test.

Once all of the assignments are complete and you have a grade of B or better, your name will be sent to Testing Services and you can make an appointment to take the COMPASS exit test. There is an automatic retake.
