Reading Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take other courses while I am taking reading courses? Yes, there are a limited number of courses that you may take while you are also taking reading courses, including Math, Foreign Language, Film, Art, Music and PE. However, each semester, you must be registered for the required reading course before you can take any other courses.
Can I withdraw from my reading class and continue to take my other courses? You cannot remain in any college-level courses unless you are enrolled in the appropriate Student Success reading and/or English courses. When you withdraw from all Student Success courses you are also withdrawn from all your college-level courses. This includes college-level math courses.
Do the reading courses count toward my graduation credit? No, reading courses do not count toward graduation. They are required pre-college courses. The grades do count in your GPA (grade point average), for full-time enrollment status for insurance purposes, and for HOPE scholarships and financial aid evaluations.
How many attempts do I have in reading? Students in Student Success reading must exit successfully within three (3) attempts. All grades including A, B, C, IP, WF, and F count as an attempt. If a student earns a W (withdraws) from reading before the midpoint it does not count as an attempt, but the student may also be withdrawn from all other college credit courses.
Can I appeal if I don’t exit in three attempts? Yes, students who do not exit the SS Reading in three (3) attempts may appeal for a 4th attempt.
