Student Spotlight: Geoffrey Smith

Year: Junior
Major: English with Teacher Certification

If you have seen the videos on YouTube advertising for GGC, you probably already recognize Geoff. He is quickly becoming a fixture here at the college because of his involvement in the advertising. He has also starred in a few videos for GGC such as “Stuff U Need 2 Know,” and a new tutorial video for digital media. He has also helped with events at the Gwinnett Braves stadium for the SGA (Student Government Association), and he is a Student Ambassador for GGC.

As a Student Ambassador, Geoff is well-known by staff and students alike, and he assists prospective student learn their way around. He is also a member of OLAS (Organization for Latin American Students) and the Creative Collective, which is a multi-sectional art group that incorporates different aspects of art such as acting, paining, poetry and anything else deemed creatively stimulating.

Born and raised in Georgia, Geoff went to school in the Collins Hill High district in Suwanee. Because of his enjoyment of English, Geoff has plans to become an English teacher in Gwinnett County for grades 6-12. “I have always enjoyed English; when I first came to GGC, I was saddened to learn English wasn’t offered at the time. I figured I would take core credits and transfer to a school which offered English as a major. I am definitely glad I stayed at GGC because I have truly enjoyed all of my English professors, especially Dr. Wunder. My two favorite professors are Dr. Wunder and Dr. Rawls. They have always been there for me to talk about things, especially life in general, and not just school related topics.”

An enthusiastic learner, Geoff plans to attend graduate school to receive his Master’s in English Education. He has also located a great place to study on campus – the back room in the library. He says he likes it because, “It is quiet, and I can sit by the window.”

Geoff is also a self-proclaimed “movie junkie and sports fanatic. I love to play any sport, watch most sports, go to concerts to see my favorite bands at my favorite venues and go to the movies to see the newest and greatest thing to come out on the silver screen.”

When speaking with prospective students, he tells them, “College will be so much more fun if you get involved with clubs and other extracurricular activities. Have a good disposition and make friends with the Deans and professors!” If students are questioning their decision to attend GGC, Geoff tells them how much he enjoys “the fact that the school is new because (he) has a hand in molding the school and in making the tough decisions about what the school will become in the coming years. Most students here enjoy being the trailblazers and helping to create a school that everyone will love and want to come to.”
