Student Spotlight: Zachary Falkenberry
Year: Freshman
Major: Information Technology
After graduating high school, Zach served in the U.S. Army Reserve and graduated from military police school in November 2007. While working for an electronics store when he was in high school, he built himself a computer which piqued his interest in information technology and solidified his desire to do something in the IT field. “I just find working with technology is like solving a puzzle, it is just trial and error. IT has become a part of everything in life.” Zach is also a commercial fixed-wing pilot, and he says, “With aircraft becoming more advanced, having an understanding of the computer systems behind the scenes is essential.”
A native of Snellville, Zach attended Brookwood High School where he excelled in classes. He chose to attend GGC because of “the small class size. All my professors have been wonderful. Professors are always available to help students and they try to focus on each individual (student’s) learning styles, and I also wanted to be part of a new college experience. The standards expected of the faculty and students assure that each student gets the most from his/her education.” Since attending GGC, Zach has maintained excellent grades. Recently, he was named to the President’s List. The President’s List recognizes students who achieve a 4.0 GPA in a semester in which they are enrolled in 12 or more credit hours.
“The best way to describe GGC is as a big city with that small town feel. Just in the past two years, GGC has grown tremendously; yet the person you buy your cup of coffee from in the mornings still learns your name and professors know all of their students. I think that is what makes GGC unique.” He believes that, “GGC is the place for someone who wants to learn from true experts in their field of study. GGC prepares you to be a professional and a leader in your field.”
Zach is also a GGC Student Ambassador. As an ambassador, he gives tours to those interested in attending GGC, and he helps during school events, such as Open House. During Open House, prospective students can learn about the “admissions process, financial aid, the extra academic support GGC offers, transferring credits to GGC and the services the college offers to the disabled. There also will be opportunities to meet with advisors who can help potential students choose the right majors; and faculty and deans, representing each of GGC’s academic areas of study.”
