Transferring Credit

General Information

  • Transferable credits may only come from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Applicants must submit official transcripts from all previously attended schools.
  • GGC follows the standard Board of Regents policies and procedures.  Additional information is noted below about those policies.
  • Georgia Gwinnett College requires all students to complete at least 25% of credit their credit in residence prior to graduation. A student is defined to be "in residence" when (s)he is taking Georgia Gwinnett College courses. Transient courses taken at another institution and courses transferred from other colleges are not considered to qualify a student as "in residence.” Typically, the last 31 semester hours of a student's academic program satisfies the requirement to be "in residence."

General Education

All Board of Regents schools have 6 established areas that must be completed.  They are labeled Areas A through F.  Each school has the ability to determine what courses go into these categories within the prescribed format laid out by the Board of Regents (BOR).  The general education area is made up of 60 hours.

Area A – contains the freshman English and math courses. (must make a “C” or better)
Area B – contains courses that are institutionally defined.
Area C – contains courses that are in the humanities (such as English and fine arts)
Area D – contains courses in the sciences, technology and math
Area E – contains courses in the social sciences
Area F – contains courses that are needed as pre-requisites for the major area and are often at the 2000 level. (must make a “C” or better).
Additional credits – 3 hours of Physical Education – one hour must be a wellness course

The BOR has provided an allowance for students who have completed a certain area at another BOR school to have that area considered completed at GGC.  (This policy applies to students transferring from GGC to another BOR school also).  Because of the number of BOR schools and the various curricula at the different schools over a period of several years, it is difficult to program that information into a student’s record without feedback from the student.  If you think you have completed a certain area at another BOR school, you would need to alert us to that fact so that adjustments can be made in your record.

Major Requirements

This area is where each major department develops the curriculum in order to provide a sound academic experience that prepares students for the work environment.  It will vary by school, but outside accrediting agencies often dictate what the course work will look like.  The total number of hours in the major requirements is 60.  In this category students must have the following:

  • Must make a “C” or better in the courses.
  • Must have at least 39 hours at the 3000/4000 level
  • Must complete a program of study outlined for graduation by each major department.

Regents and Legislative Requirements

Students who attend a Georgia BOR school must complete the Regents Reading and Writing requirements.  This can be done in 3 ways:

  • Take the Regents test (offered each semester).  Contact the testing center to register for the test. The telephone number for the testing center is 678-407-5322.  It is located in Building A, 1020.
  • Take the Regents courses for remediation and complete the course and testing option.
  • Qualifying official SAT/ACT scores

Regents Writing
SAT Reasoning Writing Section score of 560 or
SAT Reasoning Writing Section score of 500 and Critical Reading score of 510 or
ACT English score of 24 or
ACT English score of 22 and ACT Reading score of 23 or higher or
Regents Writing Test score of 2 or higher

Regents Reading

The Regents Writing Skills Course (RGTE 0199) will be exempted upon verification of any one of the following:

  • Regents Writing Test score: 2 or higher
  • College Board Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition Exemption score: 3 or higher
  • College Board Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition exemption score: 3 or higher

  • SAT Reasoning Test Writing Section score: 560 or above
  • SAT Reasoning, Writing Section Score: 500 AS WELLS AS SAT Reasoning, Critical Reading Section score: 510.  (Must be a score from a national test administration.)

If a student already holds a Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, the student is exempt from both Regents' courses and Regents test.

Students must also complete a legislative requirement in order to graduate.  The areas are Georgia History, U.S. History, Georgia Constitution and U.S. Constitution.

  • Students need to enroll in American Government (POLS 1101) to satisfy the Constitution part of the requirement.  Students who have completed American Government at a school other than a BOR school will need to complete the test to satisfy the Georgia component of the requirement.
  • Students need to enroll in U.S. History (HIST 2111 or 2112) to satisfy the History part of the requirement.  Students who have completed U.S. History at a school other than a BOR school will need to complete the test to satisfy the Georgia component of the requirement.

Other Requirements

  • CPC – These are unmet high school requirements.  Students can make up deficiencies in English and Math by satisfactorily completing the COMPASS test in either or both subjects.  Other requirements will need to be made up by taking an actual college course which will not count toward graduation.
  • Student Success – This area is available for students who may need additional support in the basic areas.  SAT/ACT and/or COMPASS test scores determine whether a student needs to enroll in Student Success.  Also, students who have been out of school for some time and feel they need some additional help may self select to enroll in Student Success.
