On August 20, 2008, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved the ground lease and rental agreement for GGC's new student housing, setting in motion the College's plan to break ground and begin building the first of five planned residence halls. The College sold $102 million in bonds in March 2009 so that the state- of-the-art residence halls could be built. The student housing project is a public/private venture with GGC’s Foundation putting up the initial investment. The Foundation will be reimbursed through the rental agreements with students. Phase II of the housing will begin construction as soon as Phase I is sold out. Phase II also will include parking decks with about 2,500 spaces and could open as early as 2011.
