Service Learning
What is Service Learning?
Integrating community service with instruction, service learning is a teaching and learning approach that is used to enhance the learning experience. It is used to teach civic responsibility and strengthen the GGC community.
Examples of Service Learning:
- An English class developing technical writing projects for a non-profit organization
- A biology class developing a community stream-clean project that analyzes environmental effects and responsibility
- A business class developing marketing materials and professional strategies for a community benefit to further awareness and knowledge about a cause
- A psychology class partnering with a county health services helpline project to support and assist local families in need
In Academics
Service learning exists in a variety of activities and disciplines in close association and partnership with the GGC academic community. Through this interactive and innovative approach of combining theory and practice in real time, students gain accountability and civic responsibility within the world around them. Opportunities are both academic and experiential.
Our esteemed faculty continues to design a variety of innovative, comprehensive components of service learning into their curricula. In turn, the SLACCE office seeks community partnership, involvement and engagement to support academic knowledge, provide opportunities for students to get involved with their community and make a difference with local and global neighbors.
