Saving Articles

Saving Articles

Avoid library printing fees by sending articles, abstracts and/or citations to your e-mail account or saving the material to a USB drive. You then can print them at campus computer labs, at home, or at other places where you can use a printer without charge.

NOTE: There are some issues saving articles from EBSCO databases in HTML and text formats. However, there are no problems saving them in PDF.

General tips:

  • Include citations. You will need this information for your bibliography or list of works cited. Also, make note of how you accessed the information (database name, whether or not you went through GALILEO, web site address, date, name of library) if this is not already provided. (See our MLA, APA, or Turabian style guides for details.)
  • If you plan to use any of the article text in a document created with a word processor, you may want to save the article as plain text. This will not allow you to see graphics or special formatting, but you will be able to open the article into a word processor.
  • If you wish to view tables, charts or graphics, choose PDF format when available. To open the article, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can download for free. (Also, you will not need to include access information in your bibliography.)

E-mailing an article to your e-mail account:

Most GALILEO databases allow you to e-mail yourself citations, abstracts and/or full text of articles.

  • Click the e-mail link (usually near the top of the screen).
  • Follow the instructions on the screen. Most importantly, you need to enter your e-mail address and choose file format(s), if possible.
  • Be sure to include the citation with the article; you may need this information when you write your paper.

JSTOR and Project Muse DO NOT support emailing articles, so if you use these databases, please come prepared with a USB drive.

Saving to a Flash Drive

  • You can save articles to flash drives. After plugging in your flash drive, give the computer a chance to recognize it before you try to save to it. After you are finished, be sure to click the small "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the Windows taskbar, and then stop your flash drive before unplugging it.
  • Depending on which USB port you plug your device into, it may be called G: or H:, but in any case it will be called Removable Disk.

Printing an article

  • Click on Print (usually near the top of the screen). DO NOT use the browser’s Print function unless the screen instructs you to do so!
  • For PDF articles, use the Print button on Adobe Reader’s toolbar (appears at top of browser’s window).

  • In the GGC Library, pick up and pay for your article(s) at the 1st floor Circulation Desk or the 2nd floor Mezzanine Help Desk. The cost is $0.15/page; cash and personal checks are accepted.
