What will my first appointment be like?

During your first appointment or initial assessment, you will be asked to complete documentation using a laptop in our waiting area. Then you will meet with one of our psychologists for approximately one hour. During this hour, the staff member will ask you questions about what is going on now, as well as some questions about your history. By the end of the meeting, you will have made a plan for the next steps you need to take to get the help you need.

Can my professors or parents find out that I am seeing a counselor?

No, your attendance at Counseling and Psychological Services is confidential as required by state licensing laws. There are some very limited exceptions to confidentiality, when your safety or someone else’s is at risk.

Do I have to make an appointment? Can I be seen today?

It is best to make an appointment so that we can be sure one of our staff members is available. However, if your need to speak with someone is urgent, you can typically be seen on the same day.

How often can I come to Counseling and Psychological Services?

Typically, students coming to individual or group counseling will be seen once a week. However, in crisis situations you may be seen more frequently.  

How long will I have to wait for my first appointment?

If you have not been to Counseling and Psychological Services before (and are not experiencing a mental health crisis), you may have to wait a week or more to be seen for an initial assessment.

What’s the difference between a counselor and a mentor/advisor? Where do I go for academic advising?

A counselor is a trained mental health professional (at GGC we are all licensed psychologists) who helps people with emotional issues, mental health issues or stress-related concerns. GGC mentors are faculty members who provide traditional academic advising (course selection and academic program planning) as well as support for career planning, goal clarification and personal growth.

Can someone help me with test anxiety?

Yes, each of our staff members has training in dealing with test anxiety. The Academic Enhancement Center also provides workshops on test anxiety from time to time.

Do you see couples?

Yes, however, both individuals must be current GGC students.

Who should I contact if I need to speak with someone outside of business hours?

The Georgia Crisis and Access Line is a free, 24-hour crisis line for Georgia residents. The number is 1.800.715.4225. This number is also available on Counseling and Psychological Services' voicemail any time you call our main number 678.407.5592.
