Biography

Dr. Phillip Hartley completed his undergraduate education with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina. While studying for the degree, Hartley double majored in marketing and finance and minored in sociology. Subsequently, Hartley enrolled in and completed the International Master's of Business Administration program at the same university. Over the course of that program, Hartley’s concentration was in marketing while his minor area of focus was consulting. Hartley’s doctoral degree, a Ph.D. in marketing with a concentration in consumer behavior and a minor in management, was granted by Louisiana State University.

Hartley’s industry background primarily involves sales, sales management and marketing roles in both the domestic and international settings. Further, his consulting experience has involved work with clients ranging from non-academic, on-campus organizations to local-level start-ups to large multi-national corporations. This experience informs his academic career which has included two years in a graduate assistant teaching position at Louisiana State University and a one-year visiting assistant professor position at Loyola University of New Orleans. In these posts, Hartley taught a range of marketing courses comprising Principles of Marketing, Market Research, Consumer Behavior and Marketing Strategy. Hartley has served as faculty of marketing and international business at Georgia Gwinnett College since 2013. As a part of that role, Hartley administers courses such as Principles of Marketing, Business-to-Business Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Marketing Research, and Global Business.

Hartley’s entrepreneurial experience spans nearly 20 years. In that time, he has developed a company which created and produced its own clothing line from the ground up. In addition, he continues to manage his own real estate investment / management company. Recently, these entrepreneurial interests have led Hartley to devise and co-found the Center for Emerging Business and Entrepreneurship (The CEBE) at GGC which he currently directs. The CEBE is designed to aide student-entrepreneurs in preparing themselves for and launching their own entrepreneurial endeavors.

Hartley's areas of interest with regard to teaching and research reflect his professional and educational background. Just as he teaches Global Business and Marketing courses and directs the Center for Emerging Business and Entrepreneurship, he is actively involved in pedagogical and more practitioner-oriented research projects in the areas of international business, marketing and entrepreneurship. Specifically, Hartley's research topics range from branding and social marketing to cultural influences on consumer behavior to best practices for business educators.
