Biography

Dr. Ekaterina (Katya) Nathanson joined Georgia Gwinnett College in August 2014 as an assistant professor of mathematics. She received her bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and computer science from Kuban State University, Russia. She came to US as an intern to work at Integrated DNA Technologies, Inc., Coralville, Iowa.

Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) is a world leader in manufacturing synthetic DNA for research and diagnostic purposes. At IDT, Nathanson worked in the design engineering department where her projects included using data analysis to improve machine efficiency and developing a mathematical model of a thermodynamic system for certain equipment. This professional work experience sparked her interest in expanding and sharing her knowledge of applied mathematics. This is why Nathanson decided to matriculate in graduate school at the University of Iowa where she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics in August 2014.

Her goals as a teacher are to get students excited about mathematics, convince them of usefulness of studied material and motivate them to pursue studying on their own. To accomplish these goals, Nathanson emphasizes three principles: meeting students at their level, guiding them on a journey of study and sharing her passion for using mathematics to understand the world around us.
