Biography

Dr. J.B. Crabbe is an associate professor of exercise science in the School of Science and Technology. He began teaching at GGC in fall of 2011. Prior to his appointment at GGC he was at the County College of Morris in New Jersey.

Crabbe earned his B.A. from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His post-graduate studies were conducted at the University of Georgia, Athens where he earned both his M.A. and Ph.D. in exercise science. He specialized in exercise psychology, studying the behavioral and neurophysiological and psychological aspects of physical activity on mood. 

His dissertation and thesis addressed emotional and mood changes associated with exercise and sleep deprivation and further examined purported physiologic indices of these phenomenon including EEG and heart-rate variability. His peer-reviewed publications are in the area of exercise and its effects on mood and emotion, as well as nervous and endocrine systems. He has presented at the national level on these matters.

After earning his Ph.D. he went into a post-doctoral program at University of Pennsylvania in one of the nation’s largest sleep research labs. There, his research centered on diminished insulin kinetics associated with sleep deprivation and its association with mood changes. He also studied the effectiveness of caffeine, modafinil and naps on those in a sleep deprived state. He provides editorial support (review) for a number of journals including International Journal of Sports Medicine, International Journal of Sport Psychology, Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Review of General Psychology and Neuroscience Letters.

Crabbe teaches both lab and lecture for Anatomy & Physiology I and II in the face to face (traditional) format in addition to teaching courses in exercise science. Crabbe is an avid cyclist and former triathlete. He also enjoys downhill snow skiing and was on Ski Patrol at Mountain Creek ski resort in Vernon, New Jersey. He is married and has two children.
