Biography

Dr. Scott Reed's research and teaching are focused on the intersections between writing, technology and pop culture. In his teaching, he favors dynamic and challenging classroom environments where students have the power and responsibility to develop their writing processes, explore areas of interest, and learn to ask thoughtful and critical questions about the world. Or, to put it differently: he really wants to turn his class into one giant video game – to make the process challenging, but fun; critical, but stimulating.

Like most games, there may be a fair amount of ranting, explosions and cheesy pop culture references, but students (hopefully) emerge on the other side feeling more confident and more capable. Reed's research examines the ways that digital and visual media change the ways we read, write and interact. Video games are, of course, a big focus of that attention, and figure as the subject as his currently under-construction book project. He's equally fascinated by the history and rhetoric of technology, especially in cybernetics and human-computer interface, as well as the history of rhetoric itself. At the end of the day, he's got a simple philosophy: academia is about understanding the world better, so there shouldn't be any part of the world that isn't somehow useful in writing.
