Atlanta – The Board of Regents today unanimously adopted Georgia Gwinnett College as the new name for the university system’s 35th unit. The name was selected to honor Georgia’s history and Gwinnett County’s innovation in technology. Georgia Gwinnett College is the first new state college in Georgia since 1965.

“In our discussions with community leaders and the Regents, we felt the name represented a bridge honoring our heritage as well as our future – recognizing the history of Georgia, while focusing on the progress and advanced technology found in Gwinnett County and the region,” stated Regent Richard Tucker.

Dr. Daniel J. Kaufman, recently selected charter president of the college noted: “As a native Georgian, I found it a fitting tribute. Gwinnett’s extraordinary history of partnering between the public and private sectors speaks to a record synonymous with innovation – a primary goal of the new state college.”

While the name bridges the state’s past and future, Georgia Gwinnett College’s structure will focus on innovation and creativity, and promises to become a model for integrating technology in higher education. “We have the opportunity not only to create a more efficient institutional design, but also a new learning experience,” stated Kaufman.

Founded on the former Gwinnett University Center campus, Georgia Gwinnett College will begin offering junior-level classes in the fall semester of 2006, and be fully operational by 2008-2009. Core academic programs will focus on four specific areas that are important to meeting the needs of the region and the state: educating teachers, information systems experts, business managers, and health system employees.

Georgia Gwinnett College is located on a 170 acre hi-tech campus in Lawrenceville, near the intersection of GA Highway 316 and Collins Hill Road. Kaufman noted that the College will begin development of an image campaign including logo design and changing signage on campus and on surrounding highways.
