Lawrenceville, GA – History was made today when Governor Sonny Perdue cut the ceremonial ribbon and officially opened Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC). GGC is the nation’s first four-year public college founded in the 21st century. Its classrooms are equipped to support leading-edge instructional technology and innovative 21st century teaching methods.

Hundreds of well wishers cheered as Governor Perdue cut the ribbon.

“Georgia Gwinnett College and its innovative approaches to teaching and learning will serve as a catalyst for continued prosperity in Gwinnett County and the entire region,” said the governor.

He applauded the visionary work of the Georgia Board of Regents, the University System of Georgia, Gwinnett County’s legislative delegation and county business leaders in establishing the college. Local and statewide leaders participating in the event included Board of Regents Chairman Allan Vigil, U.S. Representative John Linder, Georgia Senator Don Balfour, and GGC Foundation Chairman Glenn White.

“The first question that business leaders ask when considering a move to any new region is, ‘Can you offer an educated workforce?’” said Balfour, who was instrumental in driving the legislation that established the college through the Georgia General Assembly. “Because of GGC, we can.”

“We at GGC are excited about our mission and we pledge our very best efforts to create and sustain an environment where creativity and innovation are the norm, not the exception,” said GGC President Daniel J. Kaufman to students on their first day of classes. “Our intent is to build programs that are flexible, more efficient, and more effective. Our objective is to produce graduates who are committed lifelong learners, productive workers, and engaged citizens.”

Additional events are planned for the following week (see Opening Events schedule). All events will be held on GGC’s campus at the intersection of GA Hwy 316 and Collins Hill Rd. in Lawrenceville. Members of the media are invited to attend these events.

GGC was created by the Georgia General Assembly and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG). The college is expected to be a leader in the use of instructional technology and other innovative educational methods, and in the assessment of student learning to enhance education. It offers bachelor degree programs in a variety of disciplines, and serves as a unit of the USG focusing on highly-efficient approaches to student and administrative services.

GGC currently offers junior-level courses this fall, and will provide full degree programs by the 2008-2009 academic year. The programs will initially focus on three areas that are important to meeting the needs of the region and the state: business, biology and psychology. In following years, degrees in information technology, education and nursing will be created as a part of the curriculum.
