If your New Year’s resolution is to find a college to attend, make sure that you take the time to find the right college.

If your New Year’s resolution is to find a college to attend, make sure that you take the time to find the right college.

The process of selecting a college or university requires time in researching various majors, programs, campus life, cost, extra-curricular activities, location, learning support, size and more. Today, there are many different options for higher education. Some colleges allow a more traditional classroom environment for learning, while others offer online courses to accommodate learning from home or work. The key is to be comfortable with your decision.

There are many resources available in public libraries, bookstores and on the internet devoted to providing answers to questions you have about colleges and universities. The application process is fun as you begin to explore more information about colleges beyond the name, ranking of the institution and popularity of athletic programs. Many college websites offer a virtual tour of the campus online. If possible, you should visit campuses to see the facilities, talk with faculty, sit in on a class in session, talk with students and try to get an overall feeling about the different schools and how well they fit your expectations.

It is best to decide on a school based on what is important to you. Many times friends, parents and school counselors can influence your opinion based on their own expectations or experiences. Always remain focused on the fact that you are making a decision on what excites and appeals to you.

When you begin the application process, it is important to be honest and share information about who you are and not what you think they are looking for in an applicant. This terrific opportunity will offer insight about your academic prowess and celebrate your many accomplishments and achievements. The right college will be thankful for the contributions you’ll make and appreciate you for who you are by writing, “Congratulations! You have been accepted…”
