Updated May 25, 2009: Student housing is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.

“When will you have dorms?” This has to be one of the most frequently asked questions from prospective students and their parents visiting Georgia Gwinnett College’s campus and yesterday, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) received an update on the status of GGC’s student housing plans.

“A student housing option will allow Georgia Gwinnett to meet the higher education needs of students in the region who don’t have the ability to commute on a regular basis,” says GGC’s Vice President for Business and Finance Eddie Beauchamp. “Other students live close by, but are looking for the opportunity to live away from home while attending college. Students deserve options that will make higher education accessible to them.”

The USG’s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Facilities Peter J. Hickey and Executive Director of Real Estate Ventures Marty Nance updated the Board at their meeting in Carrollton, Ga., on several public-private ventures including Georgia Gwinnett’s student housing project.

The 2000-bed project will be located on the west part of campus on a 20-acre area designated for student housing, recreation and playing fields. The plans call for 1000 beds to be ready in August 2009 and another 1000 beds to be ready the following year. Different floor plan options will be available to students such as suites or apartment-style models. Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2008.
