"It is important to develop in children, the pleasure of reading," said Dr. Paula Mellom, an assistant professor of English at Georgia Gwinnett College. "We have found students and staff who will read books to the children expressively, so that they can live and feel the stories."

"The goal is to spark childrens' interest in reading so that they will become great readers themselves," Dr. Jessica Damián, GGC assistant professor of English, added.

The bilingual professors and students also participating in the events also will offer a workshop to parents, whether they speak English or not, that will recommend different strategies they can use to read with their children to help them to excel in school. In addition, they will assist parents as they choose age-appropriate literature for their children. Other activities related to reading also will be available to the children.

"We are looking to build great readers," Dr. Damián said.

The program is open to all families and there is no charge.
