GGC breaks ground on third building in less than a year

For the third time since November, Georgia Gwinnett College has brought the community together for a groundbreaking ceremony – this time on a new 77,000 square foot Student Center that will house the college’s first dining hall and an expanded version of the Barnes and Noble Bookstore as well as office and meeting space.

For the third time since November, Georgia Gwinnett College has brought the community together for a groundbreaking ceremony – this time on a new 77,000 square foot Student Center that will house the college’s first dining hall and an expanded version of the Barnes and Noble Bookstore as well as office and meeting space.

“This building was designed by students for students,” GGC President Daniel J. Kaufman said today during the groundbreaking ceremony. “This newest addition to the campus’ quad gives our students a place to congregate, make friends and socialize – moving forward our vision to making GGC a campus dedicated to developing the whole student.”

The four-story Student Center will house a 700 seat dining hall – GGC’s first – and a 5,000 square foot bookstore, more than twice the size of the current bookstore which sells textbooks, books for pleasure, and assorted GGC branded items such as notebooks, pens, baseball caps, sweatshirts, license plate holders, key chains, stuffed animals and coffee mugs.

Wayne Shackelford, Chairman of the GGC Foundation Finance Committee said today, “The GGC Foundation is pleased to facilitate financing for the new Student Center. This is an excellent opportunity to continue to support the growth of the college.” Shackelford noted that the construction financing will come by way of a $24 million dollar bond sale with the funds flowing through the foundation. The bonds should be sold in the next few weeks.

The $17 million, LEED Silver Certified building will open in the fall of 2010 in conjunction with student housing, and will house the college’s student affairs offices, student government offices, activity centers and meeting rooms with state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment. The Student Center will give the undergraduates access to a 24-hour a day open campus, allowing students from across the nation to attend college at Georgia’s newest four-year accredited college.

“As students we have been fortunate enough to be involved in the creation of this building from the ground up, from the building design, to the layout, to the interior décor, and even the furniture,” GGC Student Government Association Vice President-elect Brittany Dertz said today. “When this beautiful structure opens next year it will be the heart of student life on campus, a building that all GGC students will be proud to call their second home. The Student Center will house new places for our students to eat, study, and gather.”

The Student Center will adjoin the college’s new Library and Learning Center which is scheduled to open next summer.
