Georgia Gwinnett College has released the schedule for its first-ever women’s soccer season, head coach Domenic Martelli announced Thursday.

The 2012 slate features 18 games, including nine home games on the GGC campus in Lawrenceville.

Martelli’s team kicks off its season with a home game Saturday, Aug. 25, part of an opening day doubleheader with the Grizzlies men’s squad that starts at 1:00 p.m. Both GGC teams will take on Tennessee Temple University.

The Grizzlies will begin play this year on the GGC intramural fields adjacent to campus housing while their synthetic turf field is completed, part of the $13.5M Varsity Athletics Complex facility located along Collins Hill Road.

Martelli’s squad stays inside the Peach State for seven of its nine road games, making local trips to Brenau University (Gainesville, Ga.), Reinhardt College (Waleska, Ga.), Thomas University (Thomasville, Ga.) and Toccoa Falls University (Toccoa Falls, Ga.) among its contests away from home. The team also makes a trip southward to face the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., before a neutral-site contest against Palm Beach Atlantic University in St. Simons, Ga.

The schedule features several opponents from the NAIA as well as four from NCAA Division II and one from Division III.

“Our 2012 schedule will offer the opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best teams in the Southeast,” said Martelli. “Our NAIA opponents have had much success in recent years. Of the 13 NAIA teams scheduled, two were ranked in the top 25 nationally and five other teams finished in the RPI top 100.

“We want to have a winning record as one of our overall season goals,” Martelli continued. “Our staff and players will be working on the total program by establishing our playing style, a positive culture and traditions within a family environment that will lead to success and future championships.”

The Grizzlies have two scrimmages on the docket before their season opener, hosting one Aug. 22.
