Grizzlies name former SEC star Knight assistant softball coach

Former Southeastern Conference standout Courtney Knight has been named assistant softball coach at Georgia Gwinnett College, head coach Kat Ihlenburg announced this week.

Knight also brings eight years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels to her new position with the Grizzlies.

After reaching four NCAA Regionals as a player, Knight’s coaching days have been spent developing student-athletes in pitching, outfield play, overall defense and hitting.

“We are thrilled to have coach Knight join our staff,” said Ihlenburg. “Her knowledge of the game is tremendous and the enthusiasm she brings to our team is going to keep us growing in the right direction- up!

A four-year starter (2003-06) at the University of Georgia, Knight helped lead the Bulldogs to two SEC championships, four NCAA Regional appearances and four top-10 national rankings.

The Lithonia, Ga., native was a two-time All-SEC selection and a three-time All-Southeast Regional pick. The outfielder boasted a career batting average of .344 with a .992 fielding percentage.

Knight has spent the last six years as an assistant coach with her alma mater, Columbia High School, in Decatur, Ga., and also with Arabia Mountain High School in Lithonia, Ga.

She worked in the office of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in Virginia Beach, Va., from 2008-09 and assisted collegiately with Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, Ga., during the 2007-08 year.

Knight also has extensive club coaching experience. She was most recently an instructor at The Cage in Buford, Ga., and was previously an instructor with Grand Slam USA and the 14U Crusaders in Decatur. She spent the 2006 summer as a head coach with 14U Worth Fastpitch in Brentwood, Tenn.

Knight received her B.A. in sociology from UGA in 2007 and is currently working towards her M.S. in sports administration.

She currently resides in Gwinnett County.
