Georgia Gwinnett selected to host 2014 A.I.I. softball tournament
Georgia Gwinnett College has been selected to host the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) softball championship tournament, the league’s executive committee voted recently.
The six-team tournament is scheduled for May 1-3, 2014, on campus in Lawrenceville, Ga., at the Grizzlies’ newly-opened softball complex.
The Grizzlies will receive an automatic bid as tournament hosts. The other five representatives will be determined by regular season finish among the league’s nine other postseason-eligible squads.
The tournament champion and runner-up will automatically receive berths into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament.
The announcement from the association comes on the heels of GGC also being awarded the 2013 A.I.I. men’s and women’s soccer tournaments.
“We are thrilled to be selected as hosts of the A.I.I. softball championship tournament,” said Dr. Darin S. Wilson, GGC’s Director of Athletics. “Just like this fall with our soccer championships, we look forward to showcasing our beautiful facility and campus to our guests from across the country. We are very excited for coach Kat Ihlenburg and her program.”
Softball is one of the A.I.I.’s strongest sports as three teams reached last year’s NAIA national tournament and one, Cal State San Marcos, reached the National Championships.
Last season, the Grizzlies won 18 games in their inaugural year, ending a 25-game win streak for No. 9 Reinhardt in the process. The squad’s complete 2014 spring schedule will be released this fall.
The purpose of the Association of Independent Institutions is to promote the education, development and welfare of student-athletes through their various experiences and participation in NAIA intercollegiate athletics. See more at www.aiisports.com.
