Grizzlies set to open on-campus softball complex with Wednesday doubleheader
Georgia Gwinnett College will open another first-rate venue of the Varsity Athletics Complex on Wednesday when the Grizzly softball team hosts #14 University of South Carolina Beaufort in a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Lawrenceville.
The state-of-the-art Grizzly Softball Complex is located adjacent to the baseball complex and Athletics building just inside the GGC main entrance off Collins Hill Road.
The stadium features seating for 500, a natural-grass playing surface with team dugouts, a full scoreboard and a press box for working media.
“This is truly an exciting moment for our program,” Grizzlies head coach Kat Ihlenburg said of opening the new complex. “Our players have worked very hard with this day in mind and we are thrilled that it has come. We can’t wait to lay the foundation for Grizzly Softball in our beautiful new home.”
The Grizzlies enter Wednesday at 16-22 on their inaugural season, tackling a stiff schedule to date. GGC comes off its biggest win of the season Sunday, a 5-4 victory at ninth-ranked Reinhardt that snapped the Eagles’ 25-game winning streak.
Junior Heaven Hinton leads the Grizzlies with 30 RBIs this season while freshman Alycia Fields has a team-high .341 batting average with 10 doubles. Freshman pitcher Ashley Beyke has notched 14 wins in the circle with a 3.14 ERA.
The Sand Sharks (33-3) are winners of 10 straight and claimed a pair of wins over the Grizzlies back in March.
Parking for Wednesday’s games is available in the parking deck near the GGC main entrance. The ballpark is handicapped-accessible and admission remains free for the Grizzlies’ inaugural season.
The Grizzlies’ 25,000 square-foot Athletics building, featuring locker rooms, office space and training facilities, is set to open in the coming weeks.
