Subject: Awareness Statement GGC Coronavirus (COVID-19) MSG #2

Dear GGC Community,

Late yesterday, Governor Brian Kemp, Georgia Department of Health Commissioner Kathleen Toomey, M.D., and state officials confirmed Georgia’s first cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) involving two individuals in Fulton County who live in the same household. One recently returned from Italy and both have mild symptoms; they are isolated at home with other relatives to keep the illness from spreading.

GGC’s Administration continues to coordinate the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), the CDC, and the University System of Georgia to monitor the situation and is making preparations. According to DPH, the immediate health risk to the U.S. public is considered low at this time. Campus is currently operating as usual and classes are meeting.

There are best practices in place to help prevent the spread of illness, including washing your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable. The full list of preventive measures and other important information may be found on the GGC Coronavirus (COVID-19) webpage.

The Office of Public Safety will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as conditions warrant to ensure the health and safety of our community.
