Academic Enhancement Center

Many students find that they become more confident in their studies after visiting the Academic Enhancement Center (AEC). Available services include tutoring in many disciplines, and academic and skill-building workshops to aid your success.

In-person Tutoring

Trained professional tutors, peer tutors and faculty volunteers provide 45-minute one-on-one individual sessions and group sessions in the AEC.

Peer Supplemental Instruction (PSI)

The Peer Supplemental Instruction (PSI) program supports academic success in STEM-related courses.

Tutor.com Online Tutoring Service

Anywhere, anytime, online tutoring is available through Tutor.com. Log in to MyCourses (Brightspace by D2L), and click "Free Online Tutoring" from the menu at the top of the page, then click on "eTutoring." Complete the "system check" page by clicking "click here to continue." You will then be taken to Tutor.com.

Tutoring Prep and Expectations

Subjects

Trained professional tutors, peer tutors and faculty volunteers work with you to improve understanding of mathematics, science, technology and business course concepts. And writing tutors are available at any stage of the writing process, providing strategies for brainstorming, pre-writing, organization, drafting and revising.

Prepping for Your Session

Bring assignment instructions and rubrics.
Provide your textbook, as well as any notes and handouts, whenever possible.
Come prepared to answer and ask questions.

Additional AEC Policies

Tutoring is available for currently enrolled GGC students only.
Tutors cannot assist students with take-home exams nor take-home essay exams.
Students requesting tutoring for ITEC-1001 must attempt the assignment at least once before receiving tutoring.

The First- and Second-year Experience program challenges you to reach your full potential by supporting your college transition from enrollment through your second year.

Learning Communities

Learning Communities are a high-impact practice that help you make new and supportive friends while learning things that matter to you.

In most cases, learning communities consist of linked courses connected by an academic focus area (meta-major). GGC offers first-year learning communities and learning communities for upper-division students. Many learning communities feature learning opportunities outside the classroom.

Registration

Registering for a learning community is easy. Register at GGC's new student orientation, Grizzly Orientation, where mentors answer your questions and help you through the registration process. Or feel free to inquire by emailing @email. You will also add additional courses to your schedule that apply to your program of study.

Registration Strategy for Full-time Students

Full-time students should take nine credits (three classes) in their Learning Community that are linked to the selected meta-major. Register for six additional credits (two classes) in other relevant courses for your meta-major.

This will result in 15 credits for full-time students.

Additional Support

English as a Second Language

English for Academic Purposes (EAP Segue)

This learning community is for students who place into corequisite Segue English and for whom English is not their first language. Your English classes are designed to help develop your abilities in college-level writing and critical reading. You'll also take GGC 1000 First-Year Seminar to build your time management and study skills, explore majors and careers and more.

First Generation College Students

Grizzly First Scholars (G1)

This learning community is for students who identify as "first generation." Some G1 learning communities also provide additional support for first-generation students who are enrolling in corequisite English or math courses. You may identify as first generation if neither of your parents have earned a bachelor's degree.

G1 learning communities generally include math and/or English courses, plus GGC 1000 First-Year Seminar. You will not only learn important math or English concepts, but also the skills that support academic success. You’ll also meet other first-generation students, get a plan in place for success, and engage your Grizzly community.

These learning communities are for students who enroll in corequisite Access Math (Algebra, Math Modeling, Quantitative Reasoning or Elementary Statistics) or Segue English. Designated courses are supported by dedicated tutors in the classroom and a Student Success Advisor who serves as your mentor. Most learning community sections also add in GGC 1000, the First-Year seminar.

Who is my mentor/advisor?

How can I get the "mentor hold" on my account removed?

Students must meet with their assigned mentor/advisor before the registration period to discuss courses for the following semester to have the hold removed.

What is the difference between dropping a course and withdrawing from a course?

Dropping a course occurs when you remove yourself from a course before or during the drop/add period. The course will not be posted on your transcript and does not count as attempted credit.

Withdrawing from a course occurs when you remove yourself from a course after the drop/add deadline. Students who withdraw from a course before the withdrawal deadline will receive a “W” for the course grade. A grade of “W” will not impact your GPA, but will be posted on your transcript. Withdrawing from a course after the withdrawal deadline will result in a “WF” for the course grade. A grade of “WF” will affect your GPA and be posted on your transcript.

Check the academic calendar for the drop/add and withdrawal deadlines.

How do I change my major?

Students should first meet with their mentor/advisor to discuss career interests and the major program plan. View steps on how to change your major.

What courses are required for my major?

Courses required for graduation are listed on the major program plans. Course requirements are also listed in Degree Works, which can be found through Grizzly Den within Banner. Students should meet with their mentor/advisor to review specific major requirements.

Where do I get tutoring on campus?

Students can receive tutoring in the Academic Enhancement Center.

How many classes should I take?

Students should consider a number of factors when deciding the number of classes to enroll in each semester, such as work and family obligations, extra-curricular activities, transportation and the types of classes. Additionally, it is important to remember that you should spend approximately two hours of studying outside of class for every one hour you are registered for.

Suggested number of credit hours based on number of work hours:

Working 40 hours per week: 3 – 6 credit hours
Working 30 hours per week: 3 – 9 credit hours
Working 20 hours per week: 6 – 12 credit hours
Working fewer than 20 hours: 12 – 17 credit hours

*Full-time status for financial aid purposes is 12 credit hours. Students completing only 12 credit hours per semester will take longer to complete their degree.

How many credit hours do I need to be classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior?

Refer to the Academic Standing section of the Course Catalog for GGC's classification of students.

What are Student Success courses?

Student Success courses are learning support courses required by the Board of Regents to help students succeed in college-level courses.

Can I delay taking a Student Success course until a later semester and take all college-level classes now?

No, Student Success courses take priority.

Students may take some additional college-level courses along with the Student Success courses. (See GGC catalog or GGC course schedule for prerequisites.)

Can I withdraw from a Student Success course?

No, students must remain in their Student Success courses unless they also withdraw from their college-level courses. Special circumstances must be approved by a Student Success Advising Center advisor.

How do I exit Student Success courses?

Students exit the co-requisite-level Student Success course by passing the corresponding college-level course in English (ENGL 1101) or mathematics (MATH 1001, MATH 1101, MATH 1111, or MATH 1401) with a C or better.

What is the 30-hour rule?

Students must complete their Student Success courses before earning 30 hours of college credit or they may only take Student Success courses.

Students with transfer credit who are required to take Student Success courses may earn up to 30 additional credit-hours of college-level coursework. After earning those additional hours, students must enroll in Student Success courses only.

What are attempts?

An attempt is the number of times a student takes a Student Success course.

Co-requisite courses ENGL 0999, MATH 0997, MATH 0998 or MATH 0999 have no limit on the number of attempts.

How is my GPA calculated?

What GPA is needed to make the President’s list or Dean’s list?

English for Academic Purposes

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is dedicated to helping students whose first language is not English and who may benefit from additional preparation in academic English.

How EAP Works

Incoming students, depending upon placement level, may take an EAP-designated section of Support for English Composition, ENGL 0999E, along with their ENGL 1101 Composition I course. In this class, EAP professors provide appropriate English language support for multilingual learners. In addition, the Academic Enhancement Center (AEC) offers tutoring services and workshops on subjects that may be especially challenging for multilingual students.
