Email remains a primary target for cyber threats, and recent trends show a concerning increase in both the scale and effectiveness of these attacks. Some attempts have resulted in successful account compromise, creating elevated risk to our systems and community.

In response, Information Technology (IT) has implemented automated outbound email limits to reduce the impact of compromised accounts and help prevent large-scale spam or phishing campaigns. These safeguards are essential to maintaining a secure, trusted and resilient email environment.

Email sending limits

  • Up to 100 external emails per hour
  • Up to 250 internal emails per hour
  • Up to 500 total emails per day

What this means for you

Most faculty and staff will not encounter these limits during day-to-day email use. However, if your role involves sending large group messages or announcements, please contact the Help Desk. We will work with you to identify an appropriate solution.

When communicating with large audiences, IT recommends using approved communication tools such as server-side distribution lists, Microsoft Teams or campuswide messaging platform like Listserv rather than sending high-volume emails manually.

If you believe you have reached a sending limit in error, or if you need assistance planning a large communication, IT is here to help.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our campus email systems secure and reliable.
