School’s out and summer’s in.

For many students, that means time away from studies. For others, summer is time to continue hitting the books.

The reasons for taking summer college classes vary, including earning more credits to graduate earlier, boosting the GPA and yes, the pure love of learning. As a matter of fact, GGC’s summer enrollment is at a record 5,300 students.

Phoenix Winbush, who is studying to become a nurse, said summer is the best time to take classes.

“With fewer distractions, I get all A’s and B’s in my classes,” she said.

For GGC sophomore Isaiah Jones, who’s majoring in information technology (IT) with a concentration in cybersecurity, summer classes give him a chance to explore other subjects.

“I’m taking history and psychology, classes I didn’t think I would take as an IT major,” he said. “But the classes are interesting and I’m enjoying them, and it helps me stay on track for graduation.”

Unlike fall and spring semesters, summer courses are compressed into five weeks.

“You definitely can’t procrastinate because the classes are fast-paced,” said Winbush. “You have to stay disciplined to get your assignments done.”

While there are plenty of advantages to taking summer classes, one important thing to consider is financial aid.

“You can receive financial aid during the summer semester, provided you are eligible. If you have been enrolled in the fall and spring semesters, you’ll need to complete a summer aid request form,” said Jacqueline Garcia Mendez, assistant director of financial aid customer service. “If you start with us in the spring semester, you should also be eligible for summer aid, provided you meet the eligibility requirements.”

Sara Swope takes summer classes at GGC, even though she is a student at another Georgia university.

“I like going to GGC because it’s close to my house and I can get my pre-requisites done,” she said. “I’ve taken over 40 credit hours here. The atmosphere and the professors here are wonderful.”

The reason Swope won’t graduate from GGC?

“If I could major in horticulture, I would definitely get my degree here,” she said.

Garcia Mendez tells students a few keys to maintaining their financial aid over the summer.

“When it comes to summer courses, it’s essential to pick a schedule that feels manageable to you. Taking on too much can lead to challenges, including the potential loss of your financial aid eligibility if you don’t successfully complete the courses,” she said. “By choosing a few courses that you’re confident you can complete, you show your commitment to your education, which is key to keeping your financial aid. Remember, balance is essential – enjoy the summer while making progress on your studies!”
