Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags are everywhere in retail, hospitals and even ID cards and they are meant to keep information safe. But a research team, including Georgia Gwinnett College’s Dr. Umar M. Khokhar, associate professor of information technology, has revealed serious flaws in a leading RFID security system.

The joint study shows how hackers could exploit these weaknesses while also proposing a stronger, future-proof solution to better protect everyday technology. The International Journal of Information Security published the study, Breaking the Ultralightweight RFID Mutual Authentication Protocol: Confidentiality Under Threat (PDF), Sept. 2, 2025.
