Georgia Gwinnett College’s (GGC) Academic Commons is scheduled to be decommissioned 8 a.m. May 22, 2026. Academic Commons was originally created as a space for faculty to collaborate and build their digital presence. However, due to low usage, security issues, overlapping tools and changes in the college’s software systems, Information Technology (IT) and the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) have reviewed the platform and determined that these goals will be better achieved through other, more widely used tools such as Microsoft Teams and MyCourses.

What does this mean for faculty?

  • Badges awarded within the Academic Commons platform will be transferred to MyCourses and made available via the Awards tool. Faculty with awarded badges will receive instructions on how to claim their badges in MyCourses after March 23.
  • Any currently active groups within Academic Commons will need to be recreated in Microsoft Teams before May 22. Workshops will be available on Microsoft Teams from IT. CTE staff members are available to consult on moving content from Academic Commons to Microsoft Teams.
  • Blogs hosted on Academic Commons cannot be migrated to another platform. CTE staff are available to consult on options for archiving content. All archiving must be completed before May 22. The public CV repository offers faculty the ability to share information on their professional activities.

Next steps

  1. Look for communications regarding claiming badges.
  2. Check the event calendar to attend a Microsoft Teams workshop.
  3. Schedule a consultation with CTE to develop a plan for archiving your commons.ggc.edu group and blog content.

Beginning May 22, there will be no access to Academic Commons. Again, all content and data hosted on the site must be archived before May 22.
