A message from Georgia Gwinnett College’s Environmental Health and Safety team
Your safety is our priority, and we want everyone to arrive at work and home safely and have a wonderful holiday season. As winter weather conditions are expected over the next few months, it is crucial to prioritize safety when traveling. Roads can become slick, icy or snowy, and more hazardous during this season. The common winter driving safety tips are offered to help you ensure you and your loved one’s safety
Before driving
- Check the weather: Monitor weather forecasts and road conditions. Plan your route accordingly.
- Inspect your vehicle: Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready by checking tire tread, brakes, windshield wipers and fluid levels.
- Clear your vehicle: Remove all snow, ice and window moisture from windows, mirrors, lights and the roof to maintain visibility and avoid endangering other drivers.
While driving
- Drive slowly: Reduce your speed and leave extra distance between your vehicle and others.
- Brake gently: Sudden braking can cause skidding. Use a light touch and ease off the accelerator if needed.
- Stay alert: Keep both hands on the wheel, avoid distractions and remain focused on the road.
- Avoid cruise control: It can be dangerous on slippery roads.
In the event of an emergency
- Be prepared: Carry an emergency kit with items like a flashlight, blanket, water, nonperishable food and a phone charger.
- Stay with your vehicle: If stranded, stay inside your vehicle until help arrives, unless it is unsafe to do so.
Workplace flexibility
We understand that severe weather can make travel difficult. If conditions are unsafe, please inform your supervisor as soon as possible. If available, we encourage using remote work options or adjusted schedules.
