GGC faculty win Affordable Learning Grants

GGC faculty teams recently won $67,775 in Affordable Learning Grants (ALG) for the development of digital materials and related research that will save students about $190,000 annually. 

Dr. Umar Khokar, assistant professor of information technology (IT), and Dr. Binh Tran, associate professor of IT, recently won an ALG Textbook Transformation Grant to digitalize materials for a computer networking course. By providing no-cost textbooks for 300 students, the project will result in nearly $70,000 in savings to students and the college.

Dr. Lijun Pang, assistant professor of physics, led a team in winning an ALG Textbook Transformation Grant for producing no-cost materials for an astronomy course. The project will reduce textbook costs for 264 students and the college by $63,000.  

Dr. Rebecca Flynn, professor of English, and Dr. Tom Lilly, professor of English and assistant provost for Academic Assessment and Accreditation, in collaboration with colleagues at Kennesaw State University, received an ALG Research Grant for a research project that will gather performance and perceptual data from pilot and non-pilot English 1101 to identify strengths and weaknesses and steer revisions in the pilot course.

Dr. Patricia Huey, assistant professor of biology, received an ALG Textbook Transformation Grant for digitalizing textbook and supplemental resources for two biochemistry courses. The project will result in more than $55,000 in textbook savings for about 160 students. 

Dr. Rabia Shahbaz, assistant professor of mathematics, led a team in winning an ALG Continuous Improvement Grant for adapting a newly created precalculus curriculum to an online format.
