Georgia Gwinnett College will continue normal operations while closely monitoring forecasts from the National Weather Service regarding a winter storm expected to impact the Gwinnett County area this weekend and possibly into Monday. Current models indicate a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and/or snow beginning Saturday, with the potential for significant ice accumulation, high winds, rapidly dropping temperatures, and possible power outages. These conditions may result in hazardous travel across the region.
The safety of the GGC community remains our top priority. Out of an abundance of caution, students who are able to travel safely are strongly encouraged to depart campus after their last class on Friday and return home for the weekend before weather conditions deteriorate.
Residential Students
Resident students received separate emails earlier this afternoon with specific instructions and next steps related to housing, travel plans, and on-campus operations. Residential students should review that message carefully and follow the guidance provided.
Residence halls will remain open for students who are unable to leave campus. However, if power outages, water line breaks, or other storm-related impacts occur, Housing may need to consolidate remaining residents into a limited number of locations with emergency heat and meal services. Students who remain on campus should stay in close contact with the housing staff or security desk staff and promptly report any facilities-related concerns.
Dining Services
Grizzly Dining plans to operate the dining hall during brunch hours, with the possibility of modified menus or hours due to staffing limitations and storm timing. Late-night dining options will be canceled. Any additional changes to dining operations will be communicated as necessary.
Based on current forecasts, the College is evaluating the possibility of reduced operations or closure on Saturday and Sunday, in addition to the potential for closure on Monday. Updates regarding weekend and Monday operations will be shared with the GGC community as conditions become clearer.
Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to monitor official GGC communications, including RAVE alerts, email messages, and updates on the College website and social media channels. Please ensure you are signed up for RAVE alerts at https://www.getrave.com/login/ggc as email access may be limited during severe weather.
Now is the time to prepare for potential storm impacts. Community members are encouraged to:
· Monitor weather updates from the National Weather Service
· Keep mobile devices charged
· Take essential items, medications, and personal supplies if leaving campus
· Avoid unnecessary travel during hazardous conditions
Thank you for taking the necessary steps to support your safety and the safety of the GGC community. Additional updates will be shared as conditions warrant.
